In 1898 during an intensive stint as a journalist in Townsville, the stressed-out, English-born Edmund Banfield was told he only had weeks to live. Looking for respite, he and his wife found Dunk Island -where he spent the next 25 years of his contemplative life as a prolific writer and naturalist.
Banfield knew he'd found something special as he stood in the shade cast by the island's trunkless palms, and the history of Dunk Island Australia lives on into the present through its Artists' Colony, inspirational natural beauty and mind-expanding views from the top of Mt Kootaloo.
